Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI)
Overview
Many factors contribute to morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. The inherent process of frequent dialysis requiring a method of vascular access, including use of a chronic central line catheters, places hemodialysis patients at risk of exposure to infections. In order to reduce HAI in dialysis facilities, Network of New England will:
- Utilize Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) to uniformly collect data using CDC’s surveillance definitions,
- Become Group Administrator in NHSN for those facilities,
- Plan, implement and support the New England Dialysis facilities by providing guidance in enrolling in NHSN, technical support and provide feed back reports,
- Support participants through teleconferences, consultative services and communication via list serve/email and providing information on Network of New England website,
- Disseminate information to participating providers about what works and proven approaches to bloodstream infection prevention,
- Facilitate relationships between dialysis facilities and their regulatory and oversight agencies such as State Health Departments, CMS, CDC, and the Network, and
- Help identify processes that will satisfy requirements of all regulatory and oversight agencies.
